Winning at business? But failing in fitness?

I see that a lot.

I coach a few Founders/CEOs who have achieved extreme success in biz.

Some have had huge exits ($10M to $100M).

But their biz success doesn’t fulfill them like they expected it to…

And along the way they sacrificed health, peace and maybe even relationships.

So the question becomes…

What goal can we pursue that will meet our need for:

  • challenge

  • struggle

  • perseverance

  • accomplishment

But that will also make us healthier and happier in all areas of life?

Endurance is the answer. But you have to do it right.

Here’s how.

How CEOs Fail At Endurance

The biggest training obstacles for CEOs: time and travel

  • they’re short on time (especially if they have young kids)

  • they’re often traveling multiple times per month (or multiple weeks at a time)

For these folks, doing a 70.3 or Ironman with a stock internet training plan is the most stressful way to attempt this kind of goal.

I have an athlete who tried this in the past. He said he…

  • was lost on how to adjust the plan

  • doubted that he was making progress

  • wasted a ton of time researching training strategies online

It was a losing approach.

A Better Way

CEOs like 3 things:

  1. Speed

  2. High ROI

  3. Sustainable Growth

So we can apply these principles to training.

Here are some examples:

Speed might look like telling them exactly what tech to buy when they get started. Or what to fuel with when they start doing longer training.

(Remember “wasted time researching online” from the example above? We remove that)

High ROI might mean more time on the bike early in training (so they can more reps on the part of their race that will take the longest)

Sustainable Growth might mean giving them “check down” workouts to defer to if their day goes sideways and they can’t do what’s on their training plan (so they can stay consistent)

Transferring Mindsets

Here’s how my Founder/CEO athletes have the most success:

  • We take the mindset that’s winning in business and apply it to training.

  • Then we take the mindset that’s winning in training and use it to eliminate blind spots in business.

He almost fell into the habit of chasing more revenue (a new target that he pulled out of nowhere) at the detriment of his peace of mind and family time.

We worked through an Ironman analogy that helped him stay on course with his holistic goals in life (and find peace in his company’s current growth rate).

See how his default was to go win at business? And sacrifice everything else?

We steered him back on track.

Hands On Help

For the Founder/CEO athletes, we need to play Offense against travel.

It’s very common for us to…

  • get on a Zoom call

  • log upcoming travel on their training schedule together

  • have me build the bones of their plan (for travel window) in real time

This is exactly what I did for Josh when he was taking a 6 week trip to Europe while building toward his first Ironman.

And the #1 reason here’s why it worked: it gave him peace of mind that he was still on track to his goal

  • No worrying if he’s behind

  • No stressing about training while with his family

  • No panicking and doing random huge runs (and risking injury) to make up for “lost time”

Instead, I gave him some simple concepts on how to maintain fitness while enjoying the trip. And I shifted the goal from…

  • building fitness while away

To…

  • returning from the trip healthy and ready to get back to solid training

A few months later… Boom. Ironman finisher.
