My athlete just did his first 70.3 (Happy Valley) with Tribal Training.

He did AC 70.3 solo last fall and followed an online training plan to prep for that race.

We recorded this podcast on his Happy Valley race and the difference in experiences.

You can go listen to that pod for full details.

But I want to tell you the #1 thing I took away from it…

Not Doing As Much As You Think…

I talk a lot about helping guys do 70.3s on very low volume training (sub-6 hours per week).

But I also have guys who expect to train 6 days per week and can handle more volume.

And that’s the kind of athlete Matt is.

That’s why I was surprised when I asked him the biggest difference in following an online plan vs. being coached…

Here’s what he said:

When he followed the online plan, he inevitably had to move things around.

He’s got a wife, 2 kids, a job, extended family lives close. Life happens…

So he’d move a workout here and miss a workout there. But still feel like he was on the right track.

Meanwhile, he was never looking back on his plan to see what was actually being done.

And the result?

He was doing way less than he thought he was.

And his race day experience was a disaster.

The Data Tells The Truth

It’s hard to get better (at anything) if you don’t have a true sense of the work you’re doing.

That’s why I use backend dashboards to help athletes see the work their stats and how they’re progressing.

Here are 2 of Matt’s exact charts.

Doing What You Can

For the Low Volume Athlete, “doing what you can” might mean building a foundation of 3 hours of training per week.

But for an athlete like Matt, it means cutting out the self-deception that lets you give 15-20% less than you’re capable of.

And Matt’s result?

  • more confidence

  • more athletic development

  • more personal growth along the way

And a massive 70.3 PR.

Watch this 3 minute clip from the pod:

Standard Tribal Race Day

Here are a few photos from race day in Happy Valley.

Matt crushed a 45 minute 70.3 PR (on a course that had 5k more climbing on the bike and run).

Then he stuck around to see our other Tribal athlete Charlie Shuman finish (6 foot 9… former Penn State o-lineman).

And we even had another Tribal athlete Trevor Coulter drive up to Penn State from New Jersey to support Matt and Charlie all day long.

This is what Team Tribal is all about.

Your Next Level

If you’re a 70.3 finisher and looking to level up like Matt did, you know how we do it inside Tribal.
